In April, 2019, Sanden Advanced Technology Corporation (Representative Director & President: Toshiyuki Kikuchi) (SDAT) announced its support for ZERO e SQUARE Incorporated*1 (ZERO e SQUARE) which plans and organizes “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb*2 - EV Challenge”.

In recent years, while global warming is taken up as a worldwide scale environmental problem, electric vehicle (EV), which emits no CO2 at all, has gotten a lot of attention. As cruising distance of EV has been extended, the capacity of battery has been increased. In order to use EV safely in an efficient way, the heat management technology has become absolutely necessary for controlling heat from driving motor and battery more comprehensively.

The purpose of this supporting activity is to gather data to accelerate the research and development of the heat management system mentioned earlier. The “lithium-ion battery temperature control system” developed by SDAT will, for collaborative research, be installed on the EV, of which setup will be tuned by ZERO e SQUARE exclusively for Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held in Colorado, USA in September, 2019.

【Features of lithium-ion battery temperature control system for race car application】
 ● Temperature control system to which Sanden’s car air conditioning technology is applied.
 ● Cooling capacity specifically tuned for severe condition such as hill climb race.

Comment of Mr. Chikara Kamiko, CEO, ZERO e SQUARE
This is the second year of the Pikes Peak EV Challenge, in which we are expecting we will be able to pursue attractive potential of EV in the marketplace. If you drive an EV on the mountain road of Pikes Peak at full throttle, the temperature of lithium-ion battery will rise and the output will eventually be limited. Sanden Holdings has provided us with the battery temperature control system so that we will be able to maintain the lithium-ion battery at appropriate temperature all the time. Thanks to this new system, we are looking forward to showing you a competitive race.

Comment of Mr. Toshiyuki Kikuchi, Representative Director & President, SDAT
While global environmental issues have recently been becoming more serious, Sanden has been preserving in its efforts of research and development under the vision of “enrich the minds of people worldwide by creating global environment in which finite resources are smoothly recycled”. We believe our mission and dream is the contribution to global environment conservation through development of products that will please people in the world. We are strongly hoping to achieve a success in this challenge and develop better products based on the knowledge gained from this activity.

SDAT, with its core technology of “heating and cooling”, is working hard on research and development of new products for the next-generation vehicles while environmentally-friendly vehicles are becoming popular worldwide. It pledges to continually provide advanced and quality products and make positive efforts to contribute to global environmental conservation and growth of the automotive industry.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a time attack in which competitors run up on a 20-kilometer winding road with an elevation of 1,500 meters to 4,301 meters high top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA. This race, now in its 97th year, is known as the second oldest race after Indy 500. It is the most famous hill climb event in the world and is called ‘The Race to the Clouds”. The weather over 3,000 meters wildly fluctuates and some drivers suffer from altitude sickness caused by low oxygen and low atmospheric pressure, so this race is called the one and only motor sports event that is held under the extreme environments unlike any other in the world.
