Product Information

We are pursuing the next generation of air conditioning systems, aiming to create comfortable environments for people and the planet

Automotive Air Conditioning System

With “cooling and heating” as our key technologies, we manufacture and sell various components for automotive air conditioners on a global scale. In doing so, we live up to the trust placed in us by major automotive, construction, and agricultural machinery manufacturers

Heat Pump System

Air conditioning system uses heat from the outside air and repeatedly compresses, liquefies, and evaporates refrigerant to provide energy-efficient heating and cooling. A feature of heat pumps is that they can move heat from outside air into a room using only the power consumed by the heat pump, thereby achieving an effect greater than the amount of electricity used.

System Product Components
  • Compressors

    Compressors

By compressing, heating, and expanding a refrigerant, compressors generate cool air. Electric compressors have built-in motors, so they do not require engine power. In air conditioning and heating systems for vehicles such as HEVs and EVs, this contributes to improved fuel efficiency, quietness, and lower environmental impact.

  • HVAC Units

    HVAC Units

HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning) units are core components of automotive air conditioning system. Switching between internal and external air, they use heat exchangers to cool or heat the air, adjusting it to the optimal temperature, humidity, and airflow.

  • Heat Exchangers

    Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers evaporate (vaporize) and condense (liquefy) refrigerant compressed by a compressor to cool and heat air.

  • Electric Coolant Heaters

    Electric Coolant Heaters

We are developing electric coolant heaters (ECH) that use electricity to heat water, as in an electric kettle, to provide a heat source for electric cars.

  • Pipes for Air Conditioning

    Pipes for Air Conditioning

Sanden has established systems for the development and production of pipes for air conditioning, mainly in Asia and India, and supplies products globally.

  • Intercoolers are components installed in vehicles that are equipped with turbochargers (superchargers) to cool compressed air, thereby improving fuel efficiency and engine output.

SANDEN COLUMNHow car air conditioners work and the role of compressors

Air conditioning is an essential car feature that keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature. This mechanism is achieved by repeating a cycle in which a gas called a refrigerant is vaporized, liquefied, and then vaporized again.
During this process, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surrounding area as it vaporizes, then when it liquefies, it is compressed, efficiently lowering the temperature inside the cabin. Compressing gas to high pressure makes it easier to liquefy, enabling the cooling function of air conditioners.

How Refrigerant Circulates Through an Air Conditioning System

How a compressor is used to provide cooling and heating

  1. Air conditioner gas is compressed by the compressor

The refrigerant is compressed and put into a high-temperature, high-pressure state. This makes it easier to cool the refrigerant efficiently.

  2. Air conditioner gas is cooled by the condenser

The compressed high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant gas is cooled and converted from a gas to a liquid. At this point, the temperature of the refrigerant drops.

  3. Refrigerant is stored in the receiver as a liquid

The receiver temporarily stores liquefied refrigerant, removing impurities and moisture.

  4. Refrigerant is sprayed out through the expansion valve

The refrigerant is sprayed, rapidly lowering the pressure to make it easier for the refrigerant to vaporize. This cools the refrigerant, giving it its cooling effect.

  5. Evaporator cools the air from the blower fan

The vaporized refrigerant absorbs heat again and cools the air from the blower fan passing around the evaporator. This cool air is sent into the cabin, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside.

As described above, car air conditioners cleverly circulate refrigerant gas through the system, using vaporization and liquefaction to cool the cabin to a comfortable temperature.
The compressor is the heart of this system and plays the key role of compressing the refrigerant to achieve the cooling effect.
